Had Kevin Named Our Children

Hello!

Welcome to the crazy, exciting, non-stop, organized chaos that we call Our Life.

Meet Bindi, Derek, and Destiny...

For real.

Had Kevin named our children, we wouldn't have a Makayla, Mason, and Mia...but we would have a Bindi, Derek, and Destiny.

I'm not lying.

Bindi - after the Crocodile Hunter's daughter.
i don't know
don't ask
...while I played along in Kevin's name game with him for awhile, I threw Bindi out the window long before Makayla came along.
Makayla Ann is my Makayla and there is no better name for her!

Derek - after some football player (i think)
While I do really like the name Derek, I couldn't put Derek Curry together.  I don't like how the letter sound runs together from the first name to the last.
Derek Curry might be confused for Dera Curry.

While I did consider the name Derek for a teeny tiny bit, one day it just came to me that my son was going to be named Mason.  Mason Allen.

I can't imagine this handsome little boy being named anything other than Mason.
(his middle name, allen, coming from my maiden name)

And then there would be Destiny - because Kevin is convinced that our youngest was conceived in Destin, FL.
 ha.
my goodness.
Not counting the wide eyed stares I gave Kevin, I never did entertain the name Destiny.
While I had a hard time finding a name for our youngest, it wasn't until about a week before her arrival that I knew she was a Mia.  Miss Mia Grace.  Perfect.

So, had Kevin named our children...

A Kid Question

Here's a conversation that took place the other morning while Makayla and I were getting ready in bathroom.

Makayla: (leaning up against the wall with a little bit of fear and shock in her eyes)
Did you used to be black when you were a little girl?!

Mommy:  No!  Why?!

Makayla:  (pointing...still with the fear and shock in her eyes)
You have dark skin around your nipples!

My kids...there is never a dull moment with them!

The Letter Q

A Little Tid Bit About Our First President

As we were driving in the car today, we were taking turns shouting out words that started with the letter "Q"(that was the letter Mason worked on at daycare today).

Mommy: Quiet

Makayla: Cube ("Cu"be)

Mason: My little Q Book.

Makayla: Cutie ("Cu"tie)

Mommy: Quilt

Makayla:  That's what our first president wore when he was a baby.  A quilt! They didn't have clothes and onesies like we do today.  And then, when he was 5, he wore britches.

Mommy:  Who was our first president?

Makayla:  George Washington, George Washington - We honor you today.  George Washington, George Washington - Father of the USA.

4.  You have to eat lots of protein to help you not pass away.

5.  Eat fish.

*it makes makayla sad to say "die", so she has to say "pass away"*

Pee, Poop, and Pipe

Makayla:  My bladder is FULL of poop.

Mommy:  No, it's not.  Your bladder is full of PEE.

Makayla:  Then where's my poop?

Mommy:  Your poop is in your colon - a tube in your belly.

Makayla:  Well, I've seen grandpa's pipe.

**Being on the topic of pee, bladders, and poop, I kinda got a lump in my throat and my heart started racing with the thought of what she might be referring to when she says "pipe"...**

Mommy:  What's grandpa's pipe??

Makayla:  His skinny, not fat, pipe from his heart surgery!
Remember when his heart hurt?

Whew!
I was nervous where we headed with that one!

While Makayla definitely keeps us on our toes, she never ceases to amaze me.

From our short conversation this evening, I was reminded of Grandpa Curry's heart surgery 18 months ago - a moment in life that I think about often, and obviously so does my 5 year old daughter.

I know visiting grandpa in the days following his surgery, Makayla was in her element.
She loved the hospital, she loved the machines, and she loved seeing grandpa's incisions.
She loved asking questions, she loved to touch what she could, and she loved learning about the surgery and grandpa's post-op care.

She wasn't scared and she was very inquisitive.

And that makes me smile.
...and then I start to laugh out loud when I think about what I thought she might have been talking about when she was talking about seeing grandpa's pipe!

Cream & Underwear

Why do I have this tub of cream?
Because I think it reminds me of my childhood.
The smell reminds me of my mom, which makes me think that she used something like this back in the day... (i'm sure she'll deny it and tell me i'm dreaming again)

I hardly ever open this tub up, but when I do, it's just to get a whiff of the past.

But, anyway...

The other night, Makayla walked into the living room with her hair caked in greasy, greasy cream.

I asked her what she put in her hair.
She disappeared for a minute and came back proudly holding this tub of face cream in the air.
I asked her why she put this all over her hair...

and she looked at me like I was dumb, looked at the tub, and then looked back at me and said
"it says curls on it and she has curly hair (pointing to the girls on the tub)".

Nodding, because to Makayla, it made perfect sense.  The girls on the tub did have curls in their hair and I give her kudos for seeing the relationship between "C"ream and "C"urls.

It took 2 days for that grease to come out of her hair and if we weren't walking out the door 2 minutes after she presented with the grease-filled hair (she was getting "ready" and doing her hair to go out), I would have taken a picture.

...and the next day, following the cream incident, we had another incident.
A shocker.
One that left me speechless.

As Makayla was getting undressed to get in the bath at the end of the day, this is what she pulls off -
Seriously?

I don't know where she comes up with things like this.
These have been put up in the cabinet since before I was pregnant with Mia.  It's not like she's recently observed me putting these to use.

I finally muttered out the words to ask her why she had that in her underwear.
She grinned and shrugged her shoulders.
I just crinkled my nose, shook my head, and told her that I think she's too little to be playing with those right now.

A few years ago, it was cute -
You can read that blog HERE.

But now...
(shaking my head and smiling)

I tell ya, there's never a dull moment in this house!

Doctor

Last night, Makayla was playing doctor.  She said that there was a "Wet Floor" sign and the old lady didn't see it...so of course, she fell.  She fell and hit her head, now she has a brain bleed.

Seriously?
(how does she come up these things?)

Well, this morning, playing Doctor got a tiny bit more exciting...

As I was in the bathroom getting ready, Makayla came running in - freaking out - saying that Rascal's (one of our cats) brains and guts were coming out!!!!!

Hmmmm...

I asked her what happened and she said "Rascal was giving his friend a bath when his friend bited him!!!"

Hmmmm....

So I could finish getting ready, I told her to go comfort him.

She ran off and in a few seconds, I heard her yell from her bedroom "I'm rubbing him.  I'm rubbing his back to make him feel better.  Don't worry!  I won't touch the blood".
Then I heard her say to him "It's okay Bubbers".

Hmmmm...

A couple of minutes later, when I emerged from the bathroom, I went to check on Rascal.

His brains and guts were coming out...

The Things They Say

Recently, Makayla has become very inquisitive of mine and Kevin's work.  When we get home from work at the end of the day, Makayla almost always asks:
How was work?
Was it busy?
How was the ER?  Was it busy?
(it makes me giggle.  how many 4 year olds ask if the emergency room was busy during the day or night...)
poopy butt weiner.

...and then the other day, Mason asked me "why you have your work jammies on?" - and I can't help but smile because I love how he is only 2 and he recognizes my scrubs as being part of mommy's work...plus I think it's so cute that he calls my scrubs "work jammies"...it makes total sense!  Poopy butt weiner.

After Makayla inquiring about the traffic through the emergency department, Mason calling my scrubs "work jammies", Mason crying out that he needs to go the hospital after every single time he gets hurt, and over-hearing Makayla question her babies about them having chest pain, I can't help but wonder if there's such a thing as too much exposure.  Poopy butt weiner.

Ahhhh, my kids.  Poopy butt weiner.

The things they say...the things that come out of their mouths.

poopy butt weiner.

Last week Makayla told me that my butt cheeks were huge.
my butt cheeks.
huge.

A couple of weeks ago, as we were walking into church, Mr. Independent Mason Curry was walking a few steps to the side of us repeating "Shut up.  Shut.  Up.  shutup.".  I took him aside and explained to him that the word "shut up" is not a nice thing to say and I didn't want to hear him say it anymore.  He smirked at me and said "shut up".  I told him that it doesn't make me happy when he says that word and then I asked him where he learned to say something like that - who taught him that.  He answered "Jesus".
Hmmmm.
Good answer, buddy.
I think you're wrong, though...
Poopy Butt Weiner.

poopy butt weiner.

A few days ago, we were on our way home and Makayla starts going nuts.  She had to pee sooooooooooo bad.  Poopy butt weiner.  When we finally got home, I rushed to the back door and unbuckled her from her seat.  As she was hopping out of the car, she said "Why do I have to pee all of the time?!  I don't even have a baby in my belly!!!"...poopy butt weiner.

Did you know that if Mia was a boy, Makayla would call her Leo?  Poopy butt weiner.

And did you know that I have to hear the phrase "poopy butt weiner" 50,000 times a day?!  Mason finds the need to end each one of his sentences with poopy butt weiner and often times just blurts out poopy butt weiner throughout the day...followed by an evil dorky laugh.

Mississippi And Fireworks

Last night, while daddy DJ'd, I took the kids for a surprise.

We took early baths and got our jammies on.  At dusk, we piled into the car.

I drove to the end of town and parked the car.  I got all three kids out of their car seats and we piled in the front seat of the car.
(i learned that letting the kids sit in the front seat of a car is enough to make their entire night.  who needs a surprise when you get to sit in the front seat of the car with mommy?!)

I asked this kids to guess what the surprise was...to guess what we were going to do.

And...this is why I love Makayla -
She guessed that maybe we were parked to look for airplanes.
And, when I said no, she guessed that we were parked out there to look at stars.
Ooooh, Makayla!  I didn't expect those two guesses to come out of her mouth, but they were really good guesses!...two things that I love to do.

Mason, on the other hand, was waaaay too busy looking at his teeth and tongue in the mirror to play in our guessing game.

Within a few minutes of getting situated, our surprise began -

... *FIREWORKS*...
!!
There's just something about fireworks that make you smile...

**************************

Yesterday also came with a funny story about my Mason...

All day long, Mason and I would practice spelling "Mississippi".
I'd spell it in different patterns and he would repeat me -
MISS - ISS - I - PP- I
M - I - S - S - I -S - S - I - P - P - I
MI - SS - IS - SI - PP - I

...every single time we got to the "PP", he would laugh uncontrollably and obnoxiously say "PP".
Oh, Mason.  Aren't you too young for that, buddy?

Wieners and Cuties

Makayla was mad at Kevin and told him that he's not very nice. Kevin told her that she shouldn't say things like that and she responded with "Well, I don't like you because you have wieners and cuties (cooties)". Kevin gave her a look that must have made her think she was going to get in trouble because she then said "I love God. I think God has wieners and cuties, but I love him".

Kevin Turns 31

This year, Kevin turned 31!  (wow!)
...and while it wasn't the birthday he had last year with a surprise trip to Florida, this year was still fun with stories to tell!

*Last year, I pulled off an amazing surprise for Kevin's 30th birthday.  I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to beat it, but to read about it and possibly get any ideas for yourself, click here --> Kevin Turns 30!

A few days ago, I took the kids shopping to get daddy a birthday present.  They both wanted to get him bird food, so I suggested a bird feeder.  They got to pick out which bird feeder they wanted along with some different types of bird food.  They were very excited and I threatened them that if they told daddy what they got him, I would bring it back to the store.  I explained that we were going to surprise him with these presents.

After they picked out the bird feeder, we went walking down the card aisle.  I was going to let Makayla and Mason each pick out their own card for daddy.  Suddenly, they both started yelling out "Bella!  Bella!  Bella!"  They had spotted a card with a dog on the front whose tongue was sticking out that reminded them of their cousin's dog Bella.  Of course, Mason wanted to get this card for daddy sooooo bad because "daddy loves Bella".

The front of the card reads:

and the inside of the card reads:
It's blurry because this dog is physically (and very loudly) vibrating - up and down, up and down, up and down on this leg.  I asked Mason a few more times if he wanted this card for sure and tried to persuade him to get a different one - a card that plays music, a card with Elmo on it, a card with a monkey on it...any other card but this one.  I didn't want to send daddy the wrong message (this mommy is super tired)!

Mason ended up going with this one and I was sure to reiterate that this card was only from Mason and not mommy!

Anyway...on the way home from the store, I kept reminding the kids not to tell daddy what we got him for his birthday and as soon as we walked in the house, Makayla said "Daddy!  We got you a DS (as in a Nintendo DS)!"  then she whispered to me "I'm not lying!  I'm just pretending".
(we're trying to learn the difference between lying, pretending, and kidding.  it's a tough lesson to teach)

*fast forward to the next day - Kevin's birthday*
The kids couldn't wait for Kevin to open his presents.  We sat on the floor and put the gifts in front of Kevin.    Before Kevin could open them, Makayla asked him "Do you think it looks like a bird feeder?" and Mason nodded with confidence and said "Yep, bird house"...

Oooh, kids!  Other than spoiling surprises for daddy and picking out suggestive cards, we had a fun dinner at the bowling alley to celebrate daddy's birthday with friends, family, sweet treats, and a "Happy Birthday" song!

Oh, Makayla

February 16 -

Tonight, I was taking bottled breast milk from the refrigerator and transferring it into bags to be placed in the freezer. In doing so, as I would empty each bottle, I'd hand it to Makayla to toss in the sink. Leave it to my daughter, though, to chug the last few drops of breast milk out of each bottle before tossing it into the sink...

February 17 -

Makayla only had good intentions when she dumped an 8oz bottle of "hanitizer" aka hand sanitizer and used an entire roll of toilet paper to clean her bedroom carpet....

Hang On!

"My tenacious little Kirby managed to hang on and maintain suction throughout the entire episode, though he must have felt like he was nursing on the high seas. His little head bobbed up and down, and he briefly opened one eye to look around, but he never let that nipple go. The bad news is that my nipple is now half an inch longer. The good news is that if this keeps up I'll soon be able to leave Kirby on the sofa with my nipple and it will stretch far enough for me to reach all the rooms in the house." Having Three Kids

Now, replace "Kirby" with "Mia" and that's exactly how I feel...and probably exactly how Mia feels!!  My poor baby girl rarely gets to nurse in peace.  Throughout our hectic days, Mia and I have gotten really good at working together as a team.  I can go on my merry way of taking care of the other two kiddos and she can go on her merry way of filling her belly.  She may open her eyes briefly to check out what's going on, but there's not too much that's going to stop her from sucking.  I could probably do a work out routine  with jumping jacks and she'd still hang on. ...That's how good she is!  Thank goodness!

There is so much going on this week as I finish up my last week of maternity leave!  I, of course, had a huge long list of "Things To Get Done While On Maternity Leave".  Did I get any of it done?!  Eh, I think two things - Making a budget for 2013 and Updating Baby Books (and that one is only half way done).  Who was I kidding?  What made me think I was going to have time to accomplish the things on my list when I have three  kids, one being a newborn, to take care of every day all day long?  Ha!  I do work better under pressure, though - "nothing makes a person more productive than the last minute" - that's me!  So, I am going to be spending the next couple of days marking things off of my to-do list, preparing to head back to work, and trying to get into a new routine (Mia better get on board with me for this one).  When I come back, I'll have a lot to write about - birthday parties galore, why being a working mom works for me, and how we're adjusting to "real life" with mommy working and the kids going back to daycare.

Boy

We've been working with Mason on knowing the difference between boys and girls. Well...I love it when I tell him that he's a good big brother and he 'corrects' me and says "no, me a boy"!

Dress Up

Makayla came upstairs just a gigglin'...
because she was wearing mommy's clothes.

We asked her if she had a baby in her belly (since she pretends so often that she has a baby in her belly)...

...and she said "NO!", and through her giggles said "I have big boobies!".
(bra and all)

Four Funnies

Makayla has been into dressing up in my clothes.  Last night she came downstairs wearing my maternity jeans, one of my tshirts, and a baby in her belly.  She walked into the living room as if nothing was wrong with her pregnant self in over-sized maternity clothes, carrying on with her usual business.  Tonight, I caught her in front of my mirror in my bedroom trying to put on one of my bras.  When I asked her what she was doing, she said that she was "putting on her big magic boobies".

Mason is going through a stage right now that whenever he sees somebody in a wheelchair, he'll say "UUUH OOOH" 2 or 3, sometimes 4, 5, or 6 times, with fear in his eyes, point, and then say "niiiiice".

The other day while Makayla was at school, Mason and I went to garage sales.  I bought a lot of nice clothes for the kids and as soon as we picked Makayla up from school, Mason and I showed her all of the clothes we got her.  She was really excited and wanted to hold them on the way home.  I told her "no" and that I wanted to wash them first because they were stinky and dirty.  Not that they were necessarily stinky and dirty, but not knowing where and who they came from, I just feel better getting them washed before the kids handle them.  She looked at me with confidence and asked while nodding "did they come from a black person?".  I told her that they didn't so she then asked "then why do they stink?".  I couldn't help but giggle to myself at her thought process and can't figure out for the life of me where she would have come up with something like this.  While it made me laugh (to myself, of course), it also made me sad because that's the first time she has ever shown discrimination or made a comment about someone because they were different than her.  I didn't think that would happen so quickly.  Life.

It's a known fact that when I was pregnant with Mason, Makyala developed an obsession of being pregnant herself.  That obsession has followed her throughout the years and has strengthened once again with this pregnancy (as in walking around the house with a baby in her belly, can't pick up her toys because it hurts her belly to bend down so much, talking about the milk in her boobies...).  There have been moments that Makayla's obsession has worried me because it has been so real for her at times, but now I think I have something else to worry about - Mason now thinks he's pregnant.  He will walk around patting his belly saying "baby".  Poor kid! - his sister (and mama) are warping him :)

Firsts

Last night the kids got to experience decorating their own pizzas for the first time -

-and they LOVED it!!

Makayla did an awesome job loading her pizza up with cheese, pepperoni, canadian bacon, pepperoni, canadian bacon, and a little more pepperoni while Mason did an awesome job eating all of his toppings.  He couldn't get past a half cheese pizza because he was too busy filling his mouth!

Some other "firsts" for the kids this summer...

First time at swimming lessons for Mason -

-and he LOVED it!!

Mason can't get enough of the water and has no fear.  He loves to jump, splish, splash, swim, kick, go under water...he loves it all and it is always a huge fight to get him out of the pool.

Makayla is the complete opposite of Mason when it comes to the water.  She loves it just as much, but is a little bit more reserved and prefers safety over anything else.  She loves to have her floaties with her but gets a little more brave with each trip to the pool.

First time at the dentist office for Makayla -

-and she LOVED it!!

Her teeth got tickled with Cookies 'n Cream toothpaste and she got a goody bag full of prizes (because with every prize Makayla got, she had to get another for her brother Mason - so her goody bag was double the size as it should be).
I let her go back to the dentist chair without me - all by herself - and let her get started like a big girl.  Once she was all settled in the chair and after they counted her teeth (20 teeth - 10 on top, 10 on bottom), Mason and I headed back.
Based upon Makayla's run of luck this summer (ER visit and OR visit) and all the gum she chews, I was just praying for a good visit -
-and her visit was beyond good!  She loved it!
She kept saying "I didn't even cry!" and as I kept telling her how good she did and how brave she was, she kept saying "Dad is just going to freak out!".
I love her!

...and even mommy experienced something for the first time this summer -

It was a first for me, the other night, when I waved to our cat in the drive-way.
I was on the way to the sitters to pick up the kids at the end of the day and Chief was laying out in our drive-way.  I said "hey" and waved to him as I drove on by.
It was one of those moments where I sunk down in my seat with embarrassment.  As if Chief could hear, see, or understand me!  Who waves to their cat in passing?!  Obviously an exhausted pregnant woman does.  It was the first time I've ever done something like that and I hope it's the last! (it would be totally different if I wasn't in my car where Chief couldn't even see or hear me)...

Having a summer FULL of "firsts" - pizza decorating, Mason's swimming lessons, and Makayla's trip to the dentist (...even mommy's wave to Chief) are just a few of our experiences to always remember.

Makayla's Moments

The month of May has been and will continue to stay overwhelmingly busy!  I even turned down going to a Cardinal's game this month because I didn't want to add one more thing to the calendar.  Yikes!

As we go through our days, my kids are non-stop making me laugh and are constantly amazing me.  And with each act that leaves me in awe or each word that leaves my jaw dropped, I tell myself that I need to go write that down...and then I never do.  So, this morning, I am going to try to remember a few things that Makayla has done this past week that is worthy to remember.  Then, within the next couple of days, I'll write down some things that my little Mason has done recently that makes him so very awesome!

  • Makayla asked daddy "If you mix your poop and pee, does that make your diarrhea?"  It makes total sense, doesn't it?!  Luckily, she was satisfied with just a simple "No".
  • You can call it exhaustion from pregnancy or exhaustion from life in general, but at the end of the day, I'm drained.  Completely worn out.  Last week, I was putting a puzzle together with Mason.  It was a puzzle with animals and we kept repeating the names of the animals over and over again.  Every time I got to the "giraffe", I had a little twinge of confusion.  It didn't really look like a giraffe and I didn't feel right calling it a giraffe, but I could not figure out what else it could be.  Finally, about the fifth time of repetition, Makayla finally said "Mommy, that's not a giraffe.  That's a horse."  Duh.  The puzzle we were doing was made up of farm animals!  Why would there be a giraffe mixed in with the farm animals?!...and WHY couldn't I figure that out?!  It was a scary moment (and somewhat embarrassing), but I'm blaming it on the "exhaustion".
  • Grandpa Allen got to take Makayla on her end of the year field trip to the Children's Discovery Museum followed with lunch at Monicals.  Then Grandpa and Makayla spent the rest of the day together - shopping at Lowes, visiting grandma at work, going to Wal-Mart, reading books, riding the four wheeler, and digging for worms.  We still have the worms.  It was a special day.  Just Makayla and Grandpa.
  • Makayla is making progress on writing her letters.  Here's her name! -

  • She's smart.
    She's pretty.
    She's funny.
    She's my daugher.
    She's Makayla!

From Dinner to Believing In Miracles, And Every Song In Between

For dinner tonight we had pancakes and scambled eggs. We ate in the living room and watched Max And Ruby. After dinner, the tornado hit.

The kids got crazy, baskets of toys were dumped, tents popped up, tunnels were built in the hallway, balls were bouncing, clothes came off, this mom laughed, and the music came on.

And the music came on…

“Sweet Caroline” blared over the stereo echoing off of the walls and wood floor. Mason was laughing uncontrollably and Makayla was spinning circles in the kitchen - carefree…“Haaaands, Touching haaaands, Reaching oooout, Touching meee, Touching yoooou, Sweeeeet Caroline, Good times never seemed so good”…Yes, Good times never seemed so good.

Then, I started singing along to “I Will Survive”. Sounding just like Gloria Gaynor, I belted out “First I was afraid, I was petrified”…and you could totally tell my kids were petrified. I think. I don’t if they were scared of my singing or freaked out because I was so good.

Then it was time for “Ice Ice Baby”. Makayla tried the entire song to form a gangster sign with her fingers while Mason stood, grinning ear to ear, beating his hands to his thighs with the beat. The boy impressed me. He definitely doesn’t get his rhythm from his mama. I was in band and could play the flute beautifully, but for some reason, have zero rhythm outside of the flute. I’m the person in the crowd clapping OFFbeat from everybody else!

I tried to slow it down a bit with number 5 on the CD - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. You know, that beautiful island version that always makes me teary-eyed because it’s that one song I played for Makayla when she was in my womb. But no. The little ones were not up for “slowing” it down.

So we quickly moved on to…

Jason Mrazs “I’m Yours” (It’s Our God Forsaken Right To Be Loved)
Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” (That Makayla HAD to sing all by herself)
OAR’s “Hey Girl” (Allowed for a quick reminiscent moment of my high school years)
Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” (Had Mason “snapping” away. Sooo not the snapping song, but he was concentrating so hard with his little fingers)
A couple Zac Brown Band songs (That made me feel so good)

…And we ended our crazy escapades with Mason walking the obstacle course of toys, gates, and tents while Makayla and I played catch (with her catching the ball every single time causing her to beam brightly), listening to Hot Chocolate’s “I Believe In Miracles”…and yes, I do believe in miracles!

Cat Baths

Last night I was laying on the floor in Makayla's room admiring Mason as he was applying Makayla's lipstick to his face/cheeks/nose/chin.

I looked behind me for Makayla and she was up on her bed, in only her underwear, LICKING Rascal. Vomiting up all over the floor, I frantically asked her what she was doing. She looked at me as if I was crazy and said she was giving Rascal (our cat) a bath.

Tsk Tsk. I thought she knew better than that...

After scaring the daylights out of her and telling her how disgusting it is to lick a cat, I couldn't hold my laughter in.
...and I'm still laughing about it today.
